    An AI/ML-ready Dataset for Investigating the Effect of Variations in CT Acquisition and Reconstruction

    Description: Differences in how computed tomography (CT) scans are acquired and reconstructed can have a negative im- pact on the performance of artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) algorithms. This project provides an AI/ML-ready dataset of real-world patient CT exams of patients who either underwent lung cancer screening or presented with a suspected stroke, providing model developers and researchers with a benchmark to evaluate and improve how AI/ML methods handle differences in acquisition and reconstruction.

These scientists will become actively involved in research into new methods that seek earlier diagnosis of disease as well as more specific (patient specific, disease specific) treatments of disease in many clinical applications.
    Computational Toolkit for Normalizing the Impact of CT Acquisition and Reconstruction on Quantitative Image Features

    Description: Computed Tomography (CT) images play an integral role in screening and diagnosing lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, and stroke. While quantitative image features can facilitate accurate characterization of diseases, these features are highly sensitive to variations in how the CT images are acquired and reconstructed, negatively impacting their reproducibility and the performance of machine learning models that utilize these features. This project investigates the effects of varying CT parameters on these image-derived features and uses that infor- mation to identify optimal techniques to mitigate their effects in a task-dependent manner.
    Framework for radiomics standardization with application in pulmonary CT scans

    Description: Radiomics models, or imaging biomarkers, have been proposed to allow automatic computer-aided diagnosis, classification, and scoring of various diseases based on imaging study data. Radiomics research and development is a rapidly growing field with the increasing availability of large imaging databases and access to sophisticated software and modeling tools; however, successful radiomics models typically require careful data curation and understanding to limit variability associated with the imaging chain (in contrast to the desired variability in the underlying patient anatomy which contains the target biomarkers). This work seeks to provide a rigorous mathematical framework with models for predicting the undesirable variability associated with the imaging device, acquisition protocol, and data processing; as well as strategies for standardization across those dependencies to rigorously estimate the underlying imaging biomarkers, thus permitting high-performance radiomics model development and application across a broad range of data sources.
