William Hsu is Professor of Radiological Sciences, Bioinformatics, and Bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles affiliated with the Medical & Imaging Informatics group. He is a biomedical informatician focused on maximizing the utility of multimodal data to detect and treat cancers earlier. His lab harnesses artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques to integrate and transform multimodal data into actionable knowledge. He serves as principal investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health (National Cancer Institute, National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering), National Science Foundation, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the V Foundation. He is a deputy editor of Radiology: Artificial Intelligence.

Using artificial intelligence to support efficient same-day diagnostic imaging in breast cancer screening
    AHRQ R21HS029257Sep 30, 2022 - Sep 29, 2027
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: Screening mammography has contributed to the 25-40% reduction in breast cancer mortality, but false-positive results and delays in obtaining follow-up imaging are potential harms. We propose an online interpretation, same-day diagnostic imaging paradigm, which aims to eliminate the anxiety-ridden wait times between screening and diagnostic evaluation and reduce unnecessary recalls by using an artificial intelligence solution to triage screening exams. We will study whether implementing an AI algorithm at the point of care can make online reading and same-day diagnostic imaging a reality in high-volume breast screening clinics.
Computational Toolkit for Normalizing the Impact of CT Acquisition and Reconstruction on Quantitative Image Features
    NIH/NIBIB R01EB031993Sep 1, 2022 - May 31, 2025
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: Computed Tomography (CT) images play an integral role in screening and diagnosing lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, and stroke. While quantitative image features can facilitate accurate characterization of diseases, these features are highly sensitive to variations in how the CT images are acquired and reconstructed, negatively impacting their reproducibility and the performance of machine learning models that utilize these features. This project investigates the effects of varying CT parameters on these image-derived features and uses that information to identify optimal techniques to mitigate their effects in a task-dependent manner.
