    Dr. Enrico Castillo is the Associate Vice Chair for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. He is a faculty member in the Center for Social Medicine and an affiliated faculty member in the UCLA Center for Community Engagement and the California Policy Lab at UCLA. He is also a member of the California State Council on Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health. Dr. Castillo’s research focuses on health equity, serious mental illness, and community-public-academic partnerships, incarceration, and homelessness, with the aim to improve the capacity of public systems to address health and social inequities.

    Dr. Castillo holds national leadership roles in research and medical education. He was a member of the second cohort of the New Voices Initiative of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He is a member of the Mental Health Advisory Committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He is a faculty member in the Career Development Institute for Psychiatry (R25 training program) and is a member of the content development and review team of the National Anti-racism in Medicine Curriculum Coalition. He served for 8 years on the American Psychiatric Association’s Council for Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities and is a current member of the Council for Advocacy and Government Relations. He is also an associate editor for Academic Psychiatry (the highest impact medical education journal in psychiatry), a column editor for Research, Community, and Services Partnerships for the journal Psychiatric Services, and member of the editorial board of Community Mental Health Journal.

    Dr. Castillo’s research has been conducted in close partnership with local, state, and national agencies and community organizations. He has also developed over 20 educational partnerships with local health agencies and community-based organizations, including Project 180, the Hammer Museum, and Dignity and Power Now (Frontline Wellness Network). He has developed graduate medical education curricula in psychiatry on the topics of public service, structural competency, physician advocacy, and health equity, which have been nationally recognized.
